In 2005, we began raising funds for the purpose of expanding our seating capacity. Initially we thought that meant purchasing a bigger building that would seat more people. Our highest desire is to know God and make Him known, and we believe this happens primarily in the context of relationships. As we further considered moving the entire church to one large building we believed that in some cases this could potentially work against fostering deep relationships and ministry on the local (neighborhood) level.
The questions and answers below are intended to speak to the multi-site model as we intend to implement it. We encourage you to talk and pray together with your house church concerning this move. In what ways does this enable our house churches the opportunity to deep relationships? How does it facilitate geographical connections among multiple house churches? How can it impact my neighborhood? How can I contribute personally to this ministry model?
A thumbnail sketch of how we anticipate the multi-site model at Common Ground
One church that meets in multiple locations on Sunday
-
We are actively seeking locations where we could have a Sunday worship service that is more geographically accessible to house churches in that area.
-
The goal would be to remain consistent with our current Sunday worship services.
Benefits:
-
Resources our house church network where it is growing
-
Allows for a more accessible venue for outlying hc’s to invite neighbors
-
Allows for more people to be involved at a basic service level in our church
-
Reduces the size of your worship experience to people who live closer to you and who you will likely have opportunity to get to know beyond Sunday
-
Cost effective compared to one large facility
Challenges:
-
Requires people to “step up” in their level of commitment and service, specifically as it relates to things that happen on Sunday (children’s ministry, hospitality, worship, etc.)
-
Occasional sermons via video instead of a live preacher
Does this essentially mean that we’re splitting into multiple churches?
No. In the same way that all of our house churches are part of a larger corporate body, each of the locations for worship on Sunday is part of the same corporate body. We will maintain one eldership, one staff and one house church network.
How will locations be targeted and selected?
We want to focus on areas of the city where there are a significant number of house churches in that area.
What locations are currently being considered?
Later this summer we will be starting a worship site on the west side of town at Eagle Creek Elementary School. For questions about this site please contact Nate Smith at the church office.
What will the church services look like when we move to multiple sites?
As similar to our current worship services as possible. There will be live worship at all locations, and a rotation between live preaching and a recorded sermon from earlier that day.
What are we doing with the building at 61st & Central? Will we still have services there?
As soon as renovations are complete on the new building at 46th and Illinois we will relocate our Midtown services to that building and, at least temporarily, cease to hold services at 61st & Central. We do not plan to sell the building at this time though. Trinity Church will continue to use the building for their church services and will begin utilizing office space for their staff. There are several recovery groups (AA, NA, etc) that will also continue meeting in the building. At the appropriate time in the future we will make a determination of whether we might use the building for another worship site, or whether it would be best to sell the building.
Will Common Ground ask me to attend a specific location?
With the goal of resourcing local house churches and empowering the church at local levels, we will suggest that people who attend the house churches near a worship location attend there on Sunday. In the event that a house church is located in the middle of two different worship locations we will ask the house church to attend the location that helps equally distribute people among the locations.
There will be some situations in which individuals live closer to a worship location than the worship location that is closest to their house church. For these circumstances we do not have all of the answers. We continue to pray through this move and assume continued dependence on the Holy Spirit to guide us.
Will there be times that we all gather together for corporate worship?
Yes. We are tentatively planning to gather the entire church for corporate worship in a single location 2-3 times per year.
What will the children’s ministry look like? Will the house churches need to volunteer more frequently?
We are committed to the spiritual formation of everyone in the family. As we move in the multi-site model we do not have all of the answers for what children’s ministry will look like at each site, other than to say it will be provided. We do anticipate needing more people to volunteer as teachers in the children’s ministry, and anticipate that the house church children’s ministry volunteer rotation could become a little more frequent, at least initially until more house churches are birthed.
How will this affect me?
We expect that it will enable deeper relationships and more connections between house churches geographically. Our goal and hope is that it will enable you to “be the church” where you live. Additionally, most people attend our current Sunday services without recognizing all of the behind-the-scenes volunteering that is necessary for the service to be held. As we move in the multi-site model we need more people to be actively involved in the various aspects of the corporate services.
