Recently, the Training School took a trip to Tijuana. While there, we visited the old city dump. In this place where the city used to dump its trash, a community has sprung up. People have built houses out of what they can find – scraps of metal and other discarded items. As we walked through the neighborhood, down roads that had been totally washed out by recent rains, we eventually came across a treacherous spot where mud, trash and flowing water blocked the road. Several men were trying to get a car out of the mud, without much luck, so they guys in our group went over to lend a hand.
After they helped get the car free, we struck up a conversation with a man from this group named Miguel. Miguel shared his story with us; how his pregnant wife had recently been in the hospital and lost their baby; how his 13-year-old daughter had run away from home searching for a better life; how he and his family had gotten kicked off their land because they didn’t have the proper documentation; how he couldn’t afford to hook up running water for his family.
Miguel’s family didn’t have much. They had a house with dirt floors, an assortment of belongings, but no plumbing, no running water, and an existence that, by our standards, would be very bleak. And yet, these were Miguel’s words: “God provides, and little by little we’re getting there. We’re raising up.” We prayed with Miguel, gave his family a little money, and then he hurried off to help catch a pig, a task that would earn another dollar for his family.
Life isn’t fair, or just, and I believe that we who follow Jesus are called to battle injustice and poverty. But even in the midst of suffering, God’s people are trusting Him, and He is raising them up.
