Deeper Connections

A Study of Ephesians

Deep calls to deep
    in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
    have swept over me. - Psalm 42:7

A 2021 Harvard survey reports that 36% of American adults report feeling lonely “frequently” or “all of the time.” This includes 61% of young adults ages 18-25 and 51% of mothers with young children (Source: Make Caring Common Project, Harvard Graduate School of Education).

The Bible tells us (and research confirms) that humans are created for deep and meaningful connection. We develop a sense of closeness and belonging when we experience supportive relationships with those around us. Connection happens when we interact with others and each person feels valued, seen, and heard.

Unfortunately, we do not always do a good job of this, at times forming unhealthy and disordered relational connections with one another. Or else we fail to create any form of relational connection at all. This can lead to feelings of pain, disconnection, and despair. The promise of the Gospel, however, is that God longs to connect with us and He invites us to experience true intimacy with Him. Flowing from and through this relationship, we come to understand how to cultivate our own deeper connections to the people in our lives. Ultimately, God is the source and creator of healthy and transformative relational connections—and He wants us to experience them in abundance.

We will explore this theme of “Deeper Connections” for seven weeks this fall using the book of Ephesians to reflect on how we can move into a deeper knowing of God, of one another, and of our neighbors. Our formation experiences, congregational events, and worship gatherings will be focused on this theme as well. Our prayer is that we can all take the next step into the deeper waters of God’s love for us.
